We are all a little Bonapartist.[1]
[1] Quoted in Eugen Weber, Action Française: Royalism and Reaction
in Twentieth-Century France (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1962), p. 15. Maurras (1868-1952) wrote this in 1888. He was arrested upon the Liberation of France
in 1944 and then imprisoned for his role in supporting the Vichy Regime while claiming
great antipathy for Germany (Nazi and otherwise) even though his Action Française movement was profoundly
counter-revolutionary, anti-Semitic and nationalistic, if not proto-Fascist.
